NOTE OF THE AUTHOR

FRANJO KOMARICA, Ph.D., theology, bishop of Banja Luka (born in Banja Luka - Novakovici, 1946). Priest (1972), specialized in theology and music (Innsbruck, Austria); professor at the Theological College in Sarajevo (liturgy, pastoral theology, pastoral work with migrants, sacral music); conductor of Sarajevo cathedral choir (1978-1986). Appointed auxiliary bishop of Banja Luka (1985), ordained by Pope John Paul II in Rome (1986). Assumed administration of Banja Luka diocese (1989). Initiated the material and spiritual renewal of this diocese and preparation for the Diocesan Synod, founded the diocesan Caritas and parish pastoral council….

President of the Council for Laity of the Bishops' Conference of Yugoslavia (1986-1989) and Croatian Liturgical Council of the Bishops' Conference of Yugoslavia (1989-1993). Participant of the Bishops' Synod in Rome (1987 and 1991).

Appointed member of the Papal Council for Dialogue with Non-Christians (1992). Elected vice-president of the newly founded Bishops' Conference of B-H (1995). President of several councils of the Bishops' Conference of B-H (1995).

During the time of war in B-H (1992-1995), the largest part of his diocese found itself under the control of Bosnian Serbs and open to systematic destruction and ethnic cleansing. The remaining part was under the control of Croats and Muslims. With his far-sighted, courageous and tireless interventions, he was able to prevent the outbreak of large-scale armed conflicts and thus save thousands of lives, not only of Catholics, but of others as well. At the head of his priests, monks and sisters, he was the one moral protection and corporeal support for the rightlesss and existentially jeopardised Catholic population. In helping the diocesan Caritas during the entire war, he tirelessly assisted not only members of his diocese and small number Catholics remaining in the areas of the Vrhbosna Archdiocese controlled by Serbian authorities, but also other endangered peoples in this area. He is the recipient of much international recognition – from the European Movement, European Union and the Croatian Victimological Society among others -- for his personal contribution “in defense of the rightless,” for his assistance to war victims and reinstatement of human rights….
